The day I stumbled upon Magic Shop Studios was just that… MAGIC! I was warmly greeted by Nat’s winning smile and chatted about the group show to learn that the watercolor I was obsessing about was painted by one of the Magic Shop Studio artists who just happened to be in her studio all day. I ran up to meet the artist Jennifer Mygatt Tatum who is pure joy. She was just as excited to talk about her work as I was to hear about her process and what inspires her to create. I purchased the watercolor and then spent time visiting the other studios and artists. I’ve collected art work for years and it’s VERY rare I find more than one artwork I want to take home under one roof. There is a unique community feel to this studio and it’s talented, kind artists, unlike anywhere else I’ve randomly discovered.

Recently moving to Petaluma, Magic Shop Studios was my first stop to explore the art scene in town.
The immediate sense of community I felt upon entering was both welcoming and invigorating. I was struck by the diverse range of artistic styles on display, from vibrant paintings, printmaking to intricate sculptures, each reflecting the unique voices of the artists. Engaging with the artists in the studio was a highlight; they were eager to share their processes and stories, which added depth to my understanding of their work.
The environment buzzed with energy and passion, making it clear that this space is not just about creating art but also about building connections and fostering a supportive community.
My visit to Magic Shop Studios left me inspired and eager to dive deeper into the local art scene.
I discovered the galleries at Magic Shop Studios on a Saturday visit to the Watershed and was struck by the quality and diversity of the work on display. The space showcases a wide range of talented studio artists working across various mediums and modalities, including painting, printmaking, photography and both two- and three- dimensional assemblage.
Despite their individual approaches, the artists seem to share a subtle thematic thread, creating a cohesive and thoughtful viewing experience. The galley layout is well-designed, encouraging quiet reflection and allowing each piece to be appreciated on its own terms. It’s a contemplative and inspiring space that invites return visits.
